How to find your style on a budget
It’s Monday morning and I am standing in front of my closet, frozen by indecision. None of my clothes “speak” to me. Well, they are definitely not saying anything nice. I hear “you are too big for me”, “your butt looks flat in me” and “I am so last year’s style!”
It is time for a complete wardrobe overhaul, but the only thing holding me back is MONEY. I don’t have an unlimited budget for new clothes and I am sure most moms are in the same situation.
That was my situation a few months ago, now I am so excited to have found my style, on a budget – and I feel awesome. Let me show you how I did it, I am sure it will work for you too!

You see, my feelings on style and fashion are simple: Go for comfort! When you are comfortable in your clothes, you will be comfortable in your own skin. Comfort = confidence! Rock it, mama!

Even in high school, I rocked my COMFORTABLE style. I was confident in my awkwardness and didn’t feel like I had anything to prove to anyone, and that’s actually how I still feel today.
Check out my “new” mom jeans – because they are AWESOME! I get so many compliments from other moms on these jeans. As you can see, it doesn’t cost a lot to wear your own style and to feel comfortable in your own skin.
I had this pair of nondescript jeans in my closet for quite some time. I never really gave them a chance, until one day I decided that I should WEAR my badge of motherhood on my sleeve – or rather on my pants.
I lined the kids up and they each placed a [easyazon_link identifier=”B002JQ0N32″ locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]handprint[/easyazon_link] on my legs. If I don’t feel like talking and a stranger asks me how many kids I have, I can just point to my legs! It’s genius, really.
You should get yourself a pair of motherhood jeans!
To find your mom-style – and rock it, I have a few tips and tricks… and I honestly think that taking fashion advice from someone like me is much more valuable than from someone who follows the herd! (Well that’s one way to spin it in my favor, I hope you appreciate the creativity!)
How to find your style on a budget:
- Stick to the basics:
- yoga pants, jeans, legging, shorts, skirts – whatever makes you feel comfortable and pretty, stock up on it.
- Know your current size!
- Not the size you were pre-kids or the one you aim to be. You have to feel confident in your own skin TODAY, dress for the body you are rocking right now.
- Wear colors that make you happy.
- I feel comfortable in blues, browns and gray. You will rarely find me in a pink dress. It’s just not me, and that’s OK!
- Don’t be afraid to copy someone’s style.
- If you LOVE how someone dresses, don’t be shy.
- Ask the person for some style tips, where she bought her clothes and tell her that you love her look.
- Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
- We are no longer in middle school, so being a copy cat will NOT land you in the hot seat with the cool kids – I promise!
- Don’t be afraid to be different.
- My mom-jeans are one-of-a-kind and that’s one reason why I love them!
- Get rid of clothes you haven’t worn in a year.
- You WOULD have found a reason to wear the yellow sun dress with the adorable skinny belt at least once last summer if you loved it that much… you didn’t, then get rid of it.
- Also get rid of clothes that you HOPE to fit into, maybe next year… chances are if they didn’t fit last year and they don’t fit this year, then… you get my point – and it is OK.
- We don’t have to fit into our high school graduation dress, trust me.
- Renew your wardrobe sensibly and without breaking the bank.
- My two favorite stores: thredUP
and Schoola.
- Send your GENTLY used clothes to them for free.
- Shop their inventory of barely used (sometimes new) clothes at dirt cheap prices.
- thredUP
: I sent them the clothes I pulled out of my closet, which gave me a credit to start shopping. Before I knew it, I had incredible “new” treasures in my closet.
- Schoola: The clothes you send raises money for the school of your choice. This is a great fundraising idea for mom-groups and PTAs.
- Ask a good friend (who is about your size) if she would like some of the clothes you don’t wear, in return for the clothes, she doesn’t wear. Even one or two new items is a success.
- Shop on eBay or on local Facebook groups for moms. In our area, we have several Facebook groups for moms to sell their used clothes and goods. I have both bought and sold with great success.
- Shop online for used clothes. You can find incredible deals! It is where I have bought most of my latest wardrobe additions.
- My two favorite stores: thredUP
Finding your style as a mom, wife – as a woman (no longer in her early 20s) is an important part of your identity. But you don’t have to lose sight of “who you are” or compromise comfort for fashion. Wear what you love. Wear what feels right – your confidence will shine through and be your fashion statement.
