Bedstefar & Jacob, 2007

Bedstefar & Jacob, 2007

Today marks the 6 year anniversary of when I last received an email from my dad.

The poem listed below was not written by my dad, but it is a perfect illustration of his, at times comical, relationship with the Danish language. My dad forwarded the poem in an email to me, my sister and my mom on March 16th, 2008. The next day, while fishing at his favorite beach location on a cliff overlooking the fjord, he suffered a massive brain bleed from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm.

I miss my dad as much today, as I did 6 years ago. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t think “Far would have laughed at this” or “I wish Far could have seen that”.

I am sharing this with you, as a reminder that tomorrow is never guaranteed. So even if you are busy, stressed or otherwise preoccupied, please take the time to reach out to the ones you love. A simple email, text or voicemail will let them know that you are thinking of them. But beware – you run the risk of making someone’s day a little happier and putting a smile on their face!

It made me laugh even though I only understood 3/4 of it. Here’s to Doug. I loved your dad. He is smiling now.

I would have tried to translate the poem – but everything would have gotten lost in translation. I’m impressed that you still remember some Danish! My dad was super special to so many!

        Nemlig!!!
