He looks at me so sweetly and innocently. “Mama? Who’s coming to visit?”
I have been preoccupied for the past hour, sorting through our “junk drawer” in an attempt to rid our house of the clutter we accumulated over time.
Three trash bags are lined up next to the garage door waiting to be thrown out for good. Old kitchen utensils, stained pads of paper and random “box tops” are spread all over the kitchen counter.
He repeats his question: “Mama, who is coming over?” I look at him, confused. “Honey, mama is busy spring cleaning. Why do you think someone is coming over?”
“Because you are cleaning! You always clean before someone visits us!”
Clearly, I need to step up my domestic management skills if our kids get the impression that a clean house equals house guests.
Truth be told, maybe I only clean right before people come to visit, but spring is in the air, so I have been bitten by the spring-cleaning-bug.
I recently received the Spring Cleaning box from Babble Boxx, full of cleaning supplies and tools – and that’s what started my latest mission to have a clean house – or at the least, a clutter-free kitchen.
One of my best friends, Sidney, is a professional organizer. Her cleaning and organizing tips are always running through my head as I embark on a cleaning spree. The kitchen IS the heart of the home. I love the tips she gave me to keep “the heart of the home” clean and organized.
Once I have conquered our “junk drawer,” I am going to keep it organized, no – really, I will.
Over the years, Sidney has also taught me how to organize a kitchen command center and keep your home free of clutter!
Declutter and Spring Clean Your Kitchen Junk Drawer:
- Empty the entire drawer.
- Keep your trash can handy, because you will be using it!
- Toss menus for restaurants you have been meaning to try. (Most restaurants have their menus online, so there is really no need for you to fill an entire drawer with soy-sauce stained menus.)
- Get plastic organizers with small compartments for random items such as “Box Tops”, paper clips and coins.
- Sort batteries by size.
- Throw away user-manuals to appliances and toys that you no longer own. Surprisingly, our drawer is filled with them.
- Start a binder with plastic sleeves for user manuals and warranty information on the appliances you currently own.
- Scrub the bottom of the drawer thoroughly with a Scrub Mommy sponge.
- Allow the drawer to dry thoroughly before you line it with Easy Liner®.
- The Easy Liner® now includes Clorox® antimicrobial protection. In other words, this miraculous liner prevents odor-causing mildew and mold from growing – and that’s always a win!
- Put away tools and gadgets you rarely use.
- Organize “household tools” such as screw drivers and pliers to keep them handy.
After I finish our junk drawer, I swiftly turn my attention to our countertops, to declutter and clean them once and for all – or at least for the day.
I take a step back and marvel at my handy-work and the stains on our kitchen chairs are glaring at me… I guess our wooden chairs and barstools needs a good spring cleaning too.
After a few hours of scrubbing, organizing, decluttering and best of all: throwing away, I am proud to say that our kitchen is spring-ready. It is even so clean that we COULD have visitors – but the rest of the house isn’t, so we will just enjoy the clean kitchen ourselves.
Here’s a run-down of the products I used. Without the right tools for the job, you risk wasting time and energy – and those are two hot commodities that moms normally aren’t in excess of.
Spring Clean The Kitchen With Duck: Easy Liner® brand shelf liner:
This great shelf liner works perfectly in our “junk drawer.” It keeps things from sliding around when you open and close the drawer. Best of all, the Clorox® antimicrobial protection means that we won’t end up with a funky smell or mildew.
The liner is easily customized to your shelf or drawer-size and best of all, it’s machine washable. This is not your grandma’s shelf liner!

Spring Clean The Kitchen With Scrub Daddy and Scrub Mommy:
These adorable and super useful scrubbers will get the grime off things you didn’t even knew had grime on them! I used these on the inside of our microwave, the stubborn caked-on cheese inside my oven, on the refrigerator shelves, our stove top and the exhaust fan.
So many great uses for these scrubbers – and the best part: you can sanitize them in the top rack of your dishwasher or in the microwave, so you never have to worry about weird smells.
The Scrub Daddy is all about hard work, while the Scrub Mommy can do both the gentle cleaning and the hard work… hmmmm, much like in real life!

Spring Clean The Kitchen With Simple Green: All Purpose Cleaner; Stone Cleaner and Polish:
We have granite countertops in our kitchen, and while I love the natural look of the granite, I get grossed out at how easily dirt can hide on the surface. It’s hard to tell when granite is completely clean.
However, with Simple Green in my cleaning arsenal, I feel confident that the countertops are as clean and shiny as they will ever get! The Simple Green All-Purpose cleaner is perfect for any mess around the kitchen. It cuts grease, dirt and grime – and the best part is that it’s non-toxic!
The Stone Cleaner and Polish leaves our countertops sparkling and shining, so there’s never a doubt in my mind that dirt, germs and grime are no where to be found!
Look here for more information on these non-toxic products, AND because your house and family deserve only the very best, here’s a Simple Green coupon code.
Spring Clean The Kitchen With TriNova: Wood Cleaner and Conditioner:
When the springtime sunlight shines through your windows, dirt has a way of magically appearing. This is exactly what happened with our wood kitchen chairs, table and barstools. All of a sudden, I saw spilled milk stains and lots of unidentified food spills.
The TriNova Wood Cleaner and Conditioner was incredibly powerful and effective. Spray-on and wipe-off, it doesn’t get much easier than that! All of a sudden our kitchen furniture sparkled and looked well-maintained, even if I had neglected it for years.
If you have wood furniture and cabinets, don’t miss the opportunity to take care of it, adding life and restoring shine.

hahaha I used to be the same with my mom – “Who’s coming to visit?” She had so much on her plate being a single mom, working all day, taking care of kids and her mom… Cleaning was usually done in a rush just to make the house look decent. Weekends and spring cleaning was reserved for the real deal 😀
Oh yeah – I can only imagine how much your mom had on her plate. I am home all week – and STILL try to catch up on the cleaning on the weekends. There’s just never enough time!
Thanks for the great review!
