8 Things You Need to Add Hygge to Your Bedroom
I am excited to work with The Modern Dane on this sponsored post. I received product and compensation in return for my honest review. Every opinion stated is 100% mine. This post was originally published in February 2020, and updated in June 2022.
The light is gently breaking through the shades. There’s a soft grunting noise in my right ear. He inhales with great purpose and exhales with the deepest sigh of happiness.
The sweet smell of his morning breath, tousled bedhead, and his lanky arms and legs sprawled comfortably in every which direction remind me to take a mental photograph lest I never forget this moment.
I pull up the comforter, carefully tucking it around the outline of his little body, just the way he’s requested it since he was a baby. The softness of our new duvet cover made of organic flax linen caresses his skin like only a broken-in snuggle blanket can do.

He quietly rolls over towards me, opening his big hazel eyes. He grabs the edge of the soft duvet as if it’s his favorite teddy bear and smiles up at me.
“Good morning!” he says, “Did you know THIS is a little kid’s natural habitat, right next to his mama!?!”
Oh swoon, this little six-year-old mama’s boy sure knows how to make my heart melt.

Sunday Hygge
I hear the car pull into the driveway, the front door opens and four happy feet bound up the stairs, followed by the purposeful steps of my husband. The dog can barely contain her excitement as she lands on the bed.
My husband enters the room behind her, holding the holy grail: my steaming hot “oat-milk latte” from the local coffee shop.
This is our hygge-filled Sunday morning routine. Snuggles in bed, freshly brewed fancy coffee, lazy mornings until all four boys wake up.
Hygge is the way we bring contentment and connection to our family life.
Hygge is as important in our family’s routine as it is in our decor and organization (or lack thereof). It is with a hygge mindset we decorate our home, especially the rooms we spend the most time in the bedroom, living room and kitchen.
Recent research indicates we spend about HALF OF OUR LIVES in our beds! Shocking, right?! This alone is a great reason to bring hygge into your bedroom, all the hygge!
We mindfully picked every item in our bedroom with the end result of adding as much hygge as possible into the space. Judging from the smiles on our kids’ faces as they snuggle in bed with us, we’ve done well, we’ve achieved maximum Sunday hygge.
If you have followed this blog for any length of time, you know how passionate I am about hygge.
Hygge in the Bedroom
Hygge is a strong focus on contentment, comfort, and coziness. Keeping those three “c”s in mind as you decorate your bedroom, will bring the best results for a space optimized for hygge.
Here are the eight areas we focused on to bring hygge into our bedroom:
- Bedding:
- Bedding should be made out of soft natural materials. Remember you want comfort and coziness!
- The colors should also be soft, comforting, and gentle on the eye.
- Patterns are perfectly fine, however, steer away from busy patterns like small polka dots. (When I think of busy patterns, I always hear my mom in the back of my head saying “this hurts my eye” – you never want something that will “hurt someone’s eyes”.)
- If throw pillows are your jam, then “the more the merrier.” If they will just end up adding clutter and be dust-collectors then skip them. Again, remember to focus on your own comfort and coziness.
- The duvet cover and pillowcases from The Modern Dane are the perfect bedding choice for a hygge-filled bedroom
- The Modern Dane bedding is made of garment-washed organic European flax linen, which to you and me means: it’s SUPER soft, light, and airy!
- The linen stays cool in the summer and is soft and snuggly for those freezing winter nights. Hygge, hygge and then more hygge!
- The pattern of the Modern Dane bedding on our bed is called “Blålig”, which is Danish for “blueish”. This pattern “is inspired by the soft blue colors of the Nordic summer dusk, and lingering outdoors with food, drink, and loved ones, as the sun slowly sets and cicadas sing. When the day turns to night, Blålig takes you there.” I am from the same part of Denmark as the owner of The Modern Dane and he 100% nailed the description of the color.
- The duvet cover we have is the King size and WOW, it’s perfect for a family-sharing bed. It’s generously sized, so our duvet fits inside and we are no longer playing tug-o-war with the covers between me, my husband, and my little mama’s boy… and the occasional dog visiting the bed.

- Plants:
-
- Since we moved to the Pacific North West, I have started bringing more house plants into our home and it’s added so much hygge to our living spaces.
- Finding the perfect plants for your home can be a daunting task, but I recently wrote a post about this exact topic, so check it out: “How to Find the Best Plants for Your Home“.
- Oversized plants like the Monstera are perfect for rooms with lots of natural light.
- Orchids look beautiful when they are in bloom and they are perfectly happy in bathroom windows when they are done flowering.
- Succulents, oh don’t get me started! I have succulents in teacups, small dishes… every type of container on every window sill of the house.
- Books:
- My favorite hygge activity, other than Sunday morning snuggles, is reading. Reading to the kids, reading in bed before falling asleep, reading whenever time allows. I keep my nightstand full of books, as you can see! There are parenting books, fiction, young adult fiction, books I am reading to the kids, and books I have read.
- Keep your favorite books close, books that inspire, books that provide information, books you WANT to read, books you are reading, books you have read – surround yourself with books.
- Books add character to a space. Looking at YOUR personal collection of nightstand books should tell someone a thing or two about YOU as a person. (I am not sure what my collection says – I will leave that for you to interpret!)

- Candles/ scents:
- Our sense of smell can evoke powerful emotions and memories. For me, lavender is my preferred “hygge” scent. Lavender is a relaxing scent and reminds me of an open field of beautiful lavender stalks waving in the wind. The candles in our bedroom are lavender scented and always have fresh bunches of lavender in the bedroom during the late summer months.
- What scent takes you back to your childhood, a happy memory, or a special day? Bring that scent into your bedroom in form of candles, oils, or flowers. Scents should be subtle and natural. You don’t want your bedroom to smell like a department store perfume lady, or maybe you do!
- Colors/ textures:
- Your color guide for a hygge-inspired room is “comfort and coziness”. If bright colors bring you happiness, then surround yourself with lots of brightness. Remember, hygge is a personal experience, so whatever warms your heart is what will bring hygge into your life.
- Personally, I just LOVE the entire color palette used in The Modern Dane bedding. Their colors are natural, calming, and easy to match with other colors already in your space. Of course, I love the colors of Blålig, but you also have to check out the colors of “Porse” and “Agern”. The colors are incredibly calming and neutral in a way they will fit in almost any bedroom.
- Adding textures to your bedroom is another great way to increase the hyggelig feel of the space. A chunky knit blanket thrown over a chair or a soft fuzzy blanket across the foot of the bed are great ways to add texture and complimenting colors.
- The bedding by The Modern Dane has the luxurious texture of flax linen. Its soft wrinkles give it a natural and relaxing look. The chemical-free European flax linen is gentle against sensitive skin. You could, of course, iron your bedding, but that takes precious time away from hygge!
- Art/ photos:
- By now you know that hygge is all about coziness, contentment, and comfort. These rules also apply to the way you decorate the walls of your hyggelig bedroom.
- On our bedroom walls, we have canvas prints of some of our favorite early family pictures and of the beach on St. John in the US Virgin Islands where we were married many moons ago. Personally, I tend to have clean (almost bare) walls.
- However, an eclectic wall with framed family photos and art is a great way to add hygge and a personal touch to your personal space.
- Natural light during the day/ Darkness at night:
- Hygge is also about the light being “just right” for the mood of the room. A dark and cozy room for bedtime and a bright and airy room for daytime activities.
- When you wake up in the morning, open the shades and let in the early morning light. It improves your mood, increases your energy, and helps to get you going.
- At bedtime, close the shades and shut off all the lights. Keep the room as dark as possible for the best quality of sleep.
- Mementos:
- When my husband went to Denmark for the first time, he was surprised at how many little mementos the Danes have on display in various parts of their house. It may be a heart-shaped rock from a family vacation, a thimble passed down from a great grandmother or a small angel figurine with a pleasant smile. Danes are known for their beautiful displays of memories and meaningful items.
- When decorating your personal space with a hygge mindset, remember to add those special rocks, pressed flowers, and figurines from a time long since passed. Looking at the mementos will bring back the memories and put a smile in your heart and THAT is what hygge is meant to do.
As you climb into bed tonight, look around your bedroom and do a quiet inventory of how many of these eight things you can check off your list.
One way I like to treat our family to a more snuggle-friendly setting and beautiful Sunday hygge memories is by making sure we sleep in the most comfortable and beautiful bedding.
I am thrilled to have found The Modern Dane. The first night I curled up in our new “Blålig” duvet cover and put my head on the matching pillows, I was immediately taken back to the beautiful Danish summer evenings of my childhood.

The coolness of the duvet cover against my skin, knowing that the product is organic and chemical-free, and the calming colors were all factors in the wonderfully sound sleep I got that night… and every night since.
Thank you The Modern Dane for helping me add more hygge to our bedroom than I could have wished for. I look forward to hearing your review of their soft garment-washed organic flax linen.
