As we face the time of year where the days are shorter and the nights are longer, there is nothing more comforting as family time around a table decorated with lit candles. In Danish we call this “hygge”, which is a way to describe a cozy ambiance. With all that said, what is more Danish, cozy and heart warming than LEGO tea candle lights?! Just in time for Halloween, this craft gives you the creative freedom to make the LEGO tea candle lights silly, scary or friendly… the choice is yours!
I was inspired by the latest series of LEGO Minifigures that made their debut recently. Series 14 is a collection of LEGO Minifigures just in time for Halloween. There are monsters, ghosts, zombies and witches! Check them out in my post: “Halloween with LEGO Minifigures” and follow me on Instagram to see where my LEGO Minifigures pop up next!

Now let’s get started crafting. This project is fun, easy and perfect for little eager hands to help.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Paint the OUTSIDE of the jars with a thin coat of Acrylic Paint, Bright Yellow. This is a perfect time to involve the little ones. Let your need for “perfection” go, since the paint should be applied in a thin coat, which makes this a child-friendly craft!
- **We are using these jars with real tea candles inside, so be sure to keep the paint on the outside of the jar. Keep the paint layer fairly thin in order for the light to shine through.**
- Let the jars dry completely. I waited 24 hours before I proceeded with the project.
- Draw LEGO Minifigure inspired faces on the OUTSIDE of the jar with a Oil-Based Fine Point Paint Marker.
- **The regular permanent marker “runs” once you spray the clear coat. The paint marker stays perfectly in place.**
- Let the jars dry completely.
- Spray the OUTSIDE of the jars with Krylon Clear Coating Gloss. This is a great finishing touch that will keep the colors bright and more durable.
- Let the jars dry completely.
- Place tea candle inside, light and enjoy!
Supplies needed:
Empty Mason or spaghetti sauce jars
(I know we all have a healthy collection of these laying around)
Oil-Based Fine Point Paint Marker
(Make sure you are using PAINT markers.
Regular Sharpie markers “run” once you spray the clear coat.)
Paint brushes
I love easy crafts that involve the kids without too many steps. Jansen (3) had a blast painting our jars yellow and then all the kids helped me pick out the faces for our jars.
Have a blast and let me know in the comments if you are doing scary faces for Halloween, or happy ones for every-day use.
