It was exactly six months since our family started to “shelter in place” due to COVID-19. Six months of sitting at home, eating and drinking my way through big emotions, uncertainty, stress, a global pandemic, boxes of cookies, and bottles of wine. Six months of a slow decline in my overall health, physical as well as mental.
On the evening of September 14th, after we celebrated our teenager’s birthday with lots of delicious, oh so delicious birthday cake, cookies and treats, I got dressed for bed. I did a double-take as I caught a glimpse of my profile and reflection in the mirror.
Maybe it was the extra piece of birthday cake, perhaps it was the second glass of wine, or possibly just the compounding effect of a sedentary lifestyle and poor food choices over the past six months, regardless, it was clear that the person in the mirror did not look or feel healthy.
As I lay in bed, a thought struck me: “You don’t HAVE to feel like this. You can make different choices and feel healthier. It’s time for you to take control of how you feel.”
The next morning, as my alarm went off at 6:00 am, I immediately went straight to my phone’s app store and downloaded the Noom app. I didn’t know ANYTHING about the Noom program, other than I had seen several good friends recommend it on social media over the past several months.
To say “I jumped in headfirst” is an understatement. Before I could stop myself, I set up my profile, paid for a three-month subscription, and decided “today’s the day I take control of my life.”

I was ready to transform my life, ready to change ALL THE THINGS immediately and for the better. But as I read the daily articles on the Noom app, I was surprised to find that apparently, I didn’t need to make any major lifestyle changes, at least not right off the bat.
Starting your journey with Noom is like dating someone with good morals. The expectations for the first few dates are low, which is a refreshing change from other weight loss programs.
Getting in a relationship with Noom doesn’t require a complete overhaul of your life on day one, you aren’t shamed for previous choices and you learn how to make better decisions every day. The Noom program is like finding prince charming in a sea of smarmy used car-sales men. Sorry, used car-sales men, the truth hurts!
Over the next two months, I lost 20 lbs, a chin, and several inches off my waistline, but most importantly, the confidence, energy, focus, and happiness I gained were immeasurable.
I was not expecting to feel this good, this healthy and I couldn’t remember the last time I felt THIS proud of an accomplishment.
Several of my friends and relatives have followed my journey with the Noom program and have asked questions. I am sure you have a lot of the same questions.
What is the Noom program and how does it help you lose weight and make healthier life choices?
- Noom is so much more than a weight loss app. It’s a little bit of magic and Jedi mind tricks all rolled into one little orange app.
- Every day, you are given a list of funny, relatable, and highly educational articles. The articles are psychology-based and gradually teach you about food, health, and the wonders of your brain and its decision-making process. The articles take between 10-15 minutes to read each day.
- You will complete daily weigh-ins, but they aren’t scary at all. The scale never laughs back at you, I promise.
- All your meals will be logged in their super user-friendly food-tracking section of the app. Most common food brands, recipes, and portion sizes are preloaded and easy to find. Logging your meal takes less than 3 minutes to do.
- The Noom app can easily be synced with your smartphone or other step-counting devices, so all your activity is seamlessly tracked.
- You get your very own Noom coach. It’s a real live person who will guide/ cheer/ encourage you when you hit plateaus, feel less than inspired or have any questions.
- There is also a “support group” with a group coach. You will get as much out of this group as you put into it. Fellow Noomers share their triumphs, struggles, recipes, and advice and you are encouraged to do the same. It’s a great sense of community of people going through the exact same process at the same time as you.
- The Noom app has lots of great recipes, inspiration, and ideas for dinners, snacks, and smoothies.
- The daily time-commitment with the Noom program is less than 20 minutes, which includes reading the recommended articles, logging your meals and your weight.
What kind of food, supplements, or shakes do you have to eat with Noom?
- One of the things I LOVE about Noom is that you don’t have to eat or drink anything that tastes like cardboard.
- No one is selling you shakes, vitamins, supplement or snake oil. No one, I promise!
- I’ve lost all my weight eating exactly what my family eats. I haven’t made special meals for myself, which was my personal requirement when I started this journey.
- As the mother of four boys, I don’t have time to make separate meals for anyone (heck, my family is lucky I cook one meal for them) and I can’t afford to spend money on branded frozen foods that taste more like cat litter than health food. (I’ve tried that diet, it didn’t last long!)
- Noom teaches you how to make LASTING lifestyle changes and food choices that are sensible and sustainable.
How has Noom changed your life?
- I took control of my health!
- As we all know, while going through COVID restrictions, it is easy to feel a great loss of control over your own life. Deciding to make healthier choices was a great way to regain some of that loss of control.
- I learned that big changes happen when you take small, gradual steps.
- Noom slowed me down and helped me make calculated changes, instead of using an “all or nothing” approach, which often causes you to burn out before you’ve even really started.
- I’m now focused on my own health, happiness, gratitude, and stress reduction.
-
- Slowing down and sharpening my focus on a more mindful way of living has ultimately lead to healthier choices.
-
Important lifestyle changes I’ve made because of Noom that are sustainable for the long haul:
- Prioritize sleep: get at least 7-8 hours per night.
- Load the dinner plate first with salad, then the rest of the food, and skip the dinner roll altogether.
- Be mindful of portion sizes.
- Keep healthy snacks visible and handy.
- Put away unhealthy snacks, making it inconvenient to reach them.
- Increase daily water intake.
- Cut back on wine. (I don’t NEED a glass of wine at the end of the day.)
- Walk at least 10,000 steps in a day. (Thank goodness for our two active dogs.)
Thanks to Noom, I am actually emerging from our COVID-restrictions (whenever they are lifted) feeling a little lighter and a lot healthier. These are incredibly stressful times. Having something positive to focus on over the past 2-3 months helped me tremendously.
