Our front door looked sad and naked – but not for long. This wooden heart decor is perfect for any season – for any room!
We went for a walk tonight, all of us, as a big happy family. I had one of those “stop NOW and smell the roses” moments when we got home and the kids were playing on our front deck. The South Florida weather has cooled quite a bit and the humidity is once again bearable. THIS is truly my favorite time of year.
We don’t have leaves that turn color, no indian summer nor do we have any need for big sweaters and Uggs – just yet. What we DO have is a brisk 75-80 degree weather, yes – I called it brisk! You try to live in 90 degree weather for six months straight, then a 15 degree drop in the temperature is definitely noticeable.
We have acorn on the ground, leafy hibiscus trees flaunting their bright pink, orange and yellow flowers. The air is breathable and clean. The sun warms like a gentle hug, without melting you to the core, as it does in the summer months. Everything about fall in South Florida is gentler, brighter and more beautiful.
(Thank you to Woodpeckers® for sponsoring this post in return for my honest opinion and review of their products.)
When we got home, we finished taking down the Halloween decorations and packed our collection of skeletons, jack o’lanterns and spiders away until next year. Our adorable bat wreath came off the front door – and all of a sudden, the door looked bare and rather sad.
I immediately jumped into action. No front door of mine will be naked for any length of time. I had ordered three wooden heart plaques from Woodpeckers a few months ago, without any real plans for what I was going to do with them. Fast forward a few hours, the three hearts had been decorated and were ready to be put on display.
These three specific creations will get your creativity flowing. Remember to share pictures from your creations in the comments.

Thanksgiving Day Handprint Wooden Heart Instructions:
- Paint the base color of the heart, remember to cover all the edges.
- I used a [easyazon_link identifier=”B001B2L83O” locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]metallic white acrylic craft paint[/easyazon_link].
- Handprints:
- Start with the largest handprint in your family. I chose not to use my husband’s or mine, as his wouldn’t have fit in the heart.
- Plan your colors so the colors won’t blend together, but rather accent and stand out against each other.
- Allow each handprint to dry completely before applying the next one.
- Use the same hand (right or left) for each handprint.
- Apply the handprints from largest to smallest.
- Write either your family’s name, the year or meaningful phrases or words in the empty space of the year.
- I used [easyazon_link identifier=”B014BP31GO” locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]chalk markers[/easyazon_link] to write the words. (They have great coverage and bright colors)
- Once ALL the paint and markers are dry, flip the heart over.
- Cut approximately 2’ of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00EV8WQI6″ locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]orange ribbon[/easyazon_link] and fold it in half.
- Place 3” of the ribbon along the back of the heart, making sure it’s perfectly straight and up the middle of the heart.
- Fire up the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01178RVI2″ locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]glue gun[/easyazon_link] and attach the ribbon securely with a healthy amount of glue.
- Allow the glue to dry completely before you flip over the heart.
- Voila! Your beautiful Thanksgiving Day heart is done and ready to be put on display.
- Wouldn’t this make an adorable annual tradition?!
Woven Wooden Heart Instructions:
- Paint the base color of the heart, cover all the edges for a complete look.
- I used a [easyazon_link identifier=”B001B2L83O” locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]metallic white acrylic craft paint[/easyazon_link] as the base.
- Use the lightest color as the base, it will make your life easier in step # 3.
- Once the paint is completely dry, trace the woven pattern with a light pencil and using a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00309RVJ6″ locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]12” ruler[/easyazon_link]. (See picture for inspiration)
- I split the base of the heart into three sections, but you may choose to split into more sections.
- Each section measured little over 2 1/4”
- Paint each of the sections their designated color.
- I painted two coats, which allowed me to go back and really fix the fine lines and completely cover the colors.
- Once ALL the paint and markers are dry, flip the heart over.
- Cut approximately 2’ of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00CLF36I0″ locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]gold ribbon[/easyazon_link] and fold it in half.
- Voila! Your beautiful woven heart is done and ready to be put on display.
- This is perfect for Valentine’s Day too!

“Chalk Board” Wooden Heart Instructions:

- Practice your handwriting on a piece of paper, until you have the desired look.
- Trace the inspirational or motivational word(s) onto the painted heart – USE PENCIL.
- I chose the word “Joy” so I can use it as a Christmas decoration.
- Paint the letter with a [easyazon_link identifier=”B01BZOSHUE” locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]flat wide paint brush[/easyazon_link], using [easyazon_link identifier=”B001B2L83O” locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]metallic white acrylic paint[/easyazon_link].
- The lettering doesn’t have to be “perfect” – this just adds to the charm of a chalk board.
- Add accent designs using [easyazon_link identifier=”B014BP31GO” locale=”US” tag=”maminthenow0e-20″]chalk markers[/easyazon_link].

- Voila! Your beautiful “chalk board” heart is done and ready to be put on display.
- This is perfect for Valentine’s Day – or any day of the year! It would look adorable in a nursery!
