When You Need Man Cave Gifts
The kids are in bed. While I wait for my husband to join me in the living room, I scroll through my newsfeed to catch up on the day’s unimportant happenings – that’s what you do on social media, right?!
It’s hard not to notice the Father’s Day ads filling every ad spot on my computer screen – although the holiday is several weeks away. There’s the usual selection of tired personalized “#1 Dad” paraphernalia and office supplies. (Insert eye roll – the kids can’t possibly give their dad yet another tie and personalized pen – not again, not ever again.)
Where is my husband? The dog is now snoring on her fluffy bed and it’s time for our date night on the couch in front of the TV. This is how most married couples with kids do date night these days, RIGHT?! You know the kind of date night where the two of you are in an unofficial race to fall asleep first.
I finally find my husband in the den, his office, or rather his “man-cave”.
When we moved into the house a year ago, we focused first on the kids’ rooms, then the common areas and before we got to the den we ran out of decorating steam and inspiration.
The “man cave” has since become our catch-all area for anything we need to hide from visitors, to give the optical illusion that we keep a tidy house. There are piles of papers, random pieces of furniture and four very blank walls.
As I open the door to his man-cave, it hits me: Father’s Day is around the corner!
We should spruce up his corner of the house and make it a bit less Neanderthal-like and maybe a bit more his style.
Maybe, just maybe the stale smell of empty chip bags and tired running shoes will become a thing of the past too – a girl can hope, right?!

We have an unspoken tradition in our family that my husband gives me a canvas print of a family photo for Christmas or my birthday.
