I come to this space to write, to pour my heart out about things that are on my mind. Some days I write about the things that are going on right now, but some days those things are too close for comfort – so I write about things that have happened in the past. I write, because it frees up space in my mind, it lightens my emotional load and it makes me happy.
I have always used the written word to express my feelings because, believe it or not, I suck at being mushy in person. My friends and family know that I am not a hugger, I am getting better at it though – but I would rather make you feel comforted by my words than my arms. Apparently I have always been like this, which I realized when I found the following poem this past week.
The poem wasn’t dated, but I know it was written around 1990, and it was meant for my childhood girl friend. I wrote it when I lived in Denmark, so English was my second language.
I opened the book of my life
and started reading the first chapter.
It was about you and me
and so was the second and the third
all the way through
it was about you and me
We’ve had our ups
and we’ve had our downs
but we’ve always had us
The story was never-ending
Everything changed around us
We grew older as the years went by
Fashions changed, seasons flew by
but one thing stayed the same
our friendship was unbreakable
We’ve had our up
and we’ve had our downs
but we’ve always had us
I’ve been through hard times
and you’ve been there for me
Now it’s my turn
I am here for you
I’ll be where ever you need me
I will walk in front to guide you
As support I’ll be by your side
If you should fall
I’ll be behind you
I’m where ever you need me
I’ve been through hard times
and you’ve been there for me
Now it’s my turn
I am here for you!
I think this qualifies as a comforting word-hug!
How do you prefer to make your friends know you love them? Hugs, words, Starbucks latte?
katie says
It depends on the friend but for the most part it’s listening when I know they need someone to talk to. Although not too much of a hugger.
